  • Jake (Jason) Miesbauer Ph.D.

    Arboriculture Research Scientist, The Morton Arboretum, Center for Tree Science

    Dr. Miesbauer leads the Arboriculture Research Group at Morton Arboretum. His research interests include tree pruning, tree biomechanics, architecture of trees, and risk management in urban environments. Before entering science full-time, he worked as a certified arborist—this gives him both lab-based and field-practical perspective. He holds a PhD in Environmental Horticulture (University of Florida) and B.S. degrees in Urban Forestry and in Business Administration (University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point).

  • Michelle Catania, MS

    Green Industry Outreach Coordinator, The Morton Arboretum


    Michelle Catania works at the intersection of research, communication, and urban tree & soil health. Her role involves translating peer-reviewed research into practices used by green industry professionals, managing data collection, and supporting tree care through improved soil and site practices. She began her Arboretum career in soil science and has deep experience in urban environmental issues. Educational background: M.S. Geography (Northern Illinois University) and B.S. in Biological Sciences.

  • Michael J. Raupp, Ph.D.

    Professor Emeritus of Entomology and Extension Specialist, University of Maryland (“The Bug Guy”)


    Dr. Raupp is a leading authority on insect biology, ecology, and pest management. He researches how plants defend themselves against insects, how natural enemies and habitat structure influence pest populations, and implements sustainable Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies for nurseries, greenhouses, and landscapes. He’s widely known beyond academia: author of Bug of the Week, frequent media guest (Good Morning America, NPR, etc.), and advocate for public understanding of insects and ecology.

  • Donald F. Blair

    Renowned Arborist, Educator, and Equipment Innovator


    Don Blair has been active in tree work since 1971, starting with his family’s business, The M. F. Blair Tree Experts (founded in 1922). He took over management in the mid-70s and has contributed heavily to arboriculture through consulting, hands-on work, writing, and lecturing worldwide. He is highly respected for innovations in tree care safety, climbing and rigging equipment, and for bridging practical arborist work with historical and technical knowledge of trees.

  • Marco Vargas

    Regional Trainer, Bartlett (Midwest)

    Originally from Lima, Peru, Marco came to the U.S. in 2002 and began his career in arboriculture working for Bartlett Tree Experts in Indiana. He developed a passion for climbing and caring for trees. In 2004, he began to participate in the ISA Tree Climbing Competitions for the Indiana chapter. In 2015, he represented the Indiana chapter at the NATCC and the ITCC. He currently serves as regional trainer for Bartlett in the Midwest, leader of the training Program for Spanish-speaking employees in the company, developer and facilitator of workshops such as the "Train The Trainer" program, production skills workshops and leadership workshops, and is a member of the Midwest division regional safety leadership team.

  • Leo Roldan

    Skills Trainer, The Davey Tree Expert Company

    Leo Roldan has more than 20 years working in the field of arboriculture. He is a TCIA qualified trainer (QT), an ISA Certified Arborist, ISA Certified Tree Worker Specialist and ISA Certified Aerial Lift Specialist. His TCIA qualifications include: crew leader, EHAP, chipper operator and aerial lift operator. He is a Certified Tree Care Safety Professional (CTSP) .
